When Cinna had come to such an end, 7 Carbo, a tyrant more capricious than he, received and exercised the chief authority. But Sulla was approaching, to the great delight of most men, who were led by their present evils to hand even a change of masters no slight good.

To such a pass had her calamities brought the city that, in despair of freedom, she sought a more tolerable servitude. They readily listened to him and paid no heed to the emissaries of Carbo.

Indeed, when a certain Vedius remarked that Pompey had run away from pedagogues to be a demagogue among them, they were so incensed that they fell upon Vedius at once and killed him.

Then he proceeded to levy soldiers, and after appointing centurions and commanders for them all in due form, made a circuit of the other cities, doing the same thing.

Then he led his forces towards Sulla, not in haste, nor even with a desire to escape observation, but tarrying on the march as he harried the enemy, and endeavouring to detach from Carbo's interest all that part of Italy through which he passed.

Pompey, however, was not alarmed, but collected all his forces into one body and hastened to attack one of the hostile armies, that of Brutus, putting his cavalry, among whom he himself rode, in the van.

Then the rest turned and fled and threw their infantry also into confusion, so that there was a general rout. After this the opposing generals fell out with one another and retired, as each best could, and the cities came over to Pompey's side, arguing that fear had scattered his enemies.

And yet no one could have expected that a young man, and one who was not yet a senator, would receive from Sulla this title, to win which Sulla was at war with such men as Scipio and Marius.

This calamity was added to the tragedy of that second marriage, and it was not the only one, indeed, since Aemilia had scarcely entered Pompey's house before she succumbed to the pains of childbirth.

Against these men Pompey was sent with a large force. They had been harshly used by Perpenna, but Pompey treated them all with kindness except the Mamertines in Messana.

These declined his tribunal and jurisdiction on the plea that they were forbidden by an ancient law of the Romans, at which Pompey said: But as it was, Pompey caused a Roman who had thrice been consul to be brought in fetters and set before the tribunal where he himself was sitting, and examined him closely there, to the distress and vexation of the audience.

Then he ordered him to be led away and put to death. Furthermore, Caius Oppius, the friend of Caesar, says that Pompey treated Quintus Valerius also with unnatural cruelty.

For, understanding that Valerius was a man of rare scholarship and learning, when he was brought to him, Oppius says, Pompey took him aside, walked up and down with him, asked and learned what he wished from him, and then ordered his attendants to lead him away and put him to death at once.

Pompey was compelled to punish those enemies of Sulla who were most eminent, and whose capture was notorious; but as to the rest, he suffered as many as possible to escape detection, and even helped to send some out of the country.

And again, on hearing that his soldiers were disorderly in their journeys, he put a seal upon their swords, and whosoever broke the seal was punished.

For Domitius had assembled there a much larger force than that with which Marius, no long time ago, 13 had crossed from Africa into Italy and confounded the Roman state, making himself tyrant instead of exile.

No sooner had he landed with part of his ships at Utica, 14 and with part at Carthage, than seven thousand of the enemy deserted and came over to him; and his own army contained six complete legions.

Some soldiers, it would seem, stumbled upon a treasure and got considerable amounts of money. When the matter became public, the rest of the army all fancied that the place was full of money which the Carthaginians had hidden away in some time of calamity.

At last they grew weary of the search and bade Pompey lead them where he pleased, assuring him that they had been sufficiently punished for their folly.

But Pompey, taking advantage of this opportunity, advanced swiftly to the attack, and crossed the ravine. However, the Romans also were troubled by the storm, since they could not see one another clearly, and Pompey himself narrowly escaped death by not being recognized, when a soldier demanded the countersign from him and he gave it rather slowly.

And when he said he would not accept the honour as long as the camp of the enemy was intact, but that if they thought him worthy of the appellation, they must first destroy that, his soldiers immediately made an assault upon the ramparts; and Pompey fought without his helmet, for fear of a peril like the one he had just escaped.

Then some of the cities submitted at once to Pompey, and others were taken by storm. Taking advantage of the good fortune and momentum of his army, Pompey now invaded Numidia.

It took him only forty days all told, they say, to bring his enemies to naught, get Africa into his power, and adjust the relations of its kings, though he was but twenty-four years of age.

Pompey himself gave no sign of the deep distress which these orders caused him, but his soldiers made their indignation manifest.

When Pompey asked them to go home before him, they began to revile Sulla, declared they would not forsake their general, and insisted that he should not trust the tyrant.

Then his soldiers seized him and set him again upon his tribunal, and a great part of the day was consumed in this way, they urging him to remain and keep his command, and he begging them to obey and not to raise a sedition.

This he said because Marius also, who was quite a young man, had given him very great trouble and involved him in the most extreme perils.

So he went out and met him, and after giving him the warmest welcome, saluted him in a loud voice as " Magnus ," or The Great , and ordered those who were by to give him this surname.

Pompey himself, however, was last of all to use it, and it was only after a long time, when he was sent as pro-consul to Spain against Sertorius, that he began to subscribe himself in his letters and ordinances " Pompeius Magnus "; for the name had become familiar and was no longer invidious.

The law, he said, permitted only a consul or a praetor to celebrate a triumph, but no one else. Therefore the first Scipio, after conquering the Carthaginians in Spain in far greater conflicts, did not ask for a triumph; for he was not consul, nor even praetor.

This was what Sulla said to Pompey, declaring that he would not allow his request, but would oppose him and thwart his ambition if he refused to listen to him.

Sulla did not hear the words distinctly, but seeing, from their looks and gestures, that those who did hear them were amazed, he asked what it was that had been said.

When he learned what it was, he was astounded at the boldness of Pompey, and cried out twice in succession: But the gate of the city was too narrow, and he therefore gave up the attempt and changed over to his horses.

Then Servilius, a man of distinction, and one who had been most opposed to Pompey's triumph, said he now saw that Pompey was really great, and worthy of the honour.

And indeed it would have been nothing wonderful for Pompey to be a senator before he was of age for it; but it was a dazzling honour for him to celebrate a triumph before he was a senator.

And this contributed not a little to win him the favour of the multitude; for the people were delighted to have him still classed among the knights after a triumph.

Only, when in spite of him and against his wishes Pompey made Lepidus consul, 17 by canvassing for him and making the people zealously support him through their goodwill towards himself, seeing Pompey going off through the forum with a throng, Sulla said: Now, however, it is time for you to be wide awake and watchful of your interests; you have made your adversary stronger than yourself.

And yet Pompey bore this with great composure, and loyally, insomuch that when Lepidus and sundry others tried to prevent the body of Sulla from being buried in the Campus Martius , or even from receiving public burial honours, he came to the rescue, and gave to the interment alike honour and security.

He took no circuitous route and used no pretence, but appeared at once in arms, stirring up anew and gathering about himself the remnants of faction, long enfeebled, which had escaped the hand of Sulla.

The situation itself, therefore , demanded Pompey, who was not long in deciding what course to take.

He took the side of the nobility, and was appointed commander of an army against Lepidus, who had already stirred up a large part of Italy and was employing Brutus to hold Cisalpine Gaul with an army.

Meanwhile, Lepidus had made a hasty rush upon Rome, and sitting down before it, was demanding a second consulship, and terrifying the citizens with a vast throng of followers.

For Brutus, whether he himself betrayed his army, or whether his army changed sides and betrayed him, put himself in the hands of Pompey, and receiving an escort of horsemen, retired to a little town upon the Po.

Here, after a single day had passed, he was slain by Geminius, who was sent by Pompey to do the deed. For as soon as the army of Brutus changed sides, he wrote to the senate that Brutus had surrendered to him of his own accord; then he sent another letter denouncing the man after he had been put to death.

The Brutus who, with Cassius, killed Caesar, was a son of this Brutus, a man who was like his father neither in his wars nor in his death, as is written in his Life.

There he fell sick and died of despondency, which was due, as we are told, not to the loss of his cause, but to his coming accidentally upon a writing from which he discovered that his wife was an adulteress.

As if for a final disease of the state, the civil wars had poured all their venom into this man. For Sertorius attacked him recklessly and in robber fashion, and by his ambuscades and flanking movements confounded a man who was practised in regular contests only, and commanded immobile and heavy-armed troops.

Thereupon Sertorius disseminated haughty speeches against Pompey, and scoffingly said he should have needed but a cane and whip for this boy, were he not in fear of that old woman, meaning Metellus.

For Metellus, contrary to all expectation, had become luxurious in his way of living and had given himself up completely to his pleasures; in fact, there had been all at once a great change in him towards pomp and extravagance, 23 so that this circumstance also brought Pompey an astonishing goodwill, and enhanced his reputation, since he always maintained that simplicity in his habits which cost him no great effort; for he was naturally temperate and orderly in his desires.

For when he supposed that his enemy was surrounded, and had made some boasts about it, all of a sudden it turned out that he was himself completely enveloped.

He was therefore afraid to stir, and had to look on while the city was burned before his eyes. By the river Sucro, though it was now late in the day, they joined battle, both fearing the arrival of Metellus; the one wished to fight alone, the other wished to have only one antagonist.

But Pompey, who was on horseback, was attacked by a tall man who fought on foot; when they came to close quarters and were at grips, the strokes fell upon each other's hands, but not with like result, for Pompey was merely wounded, whereas he lopped off the hand of his opponent.

They fought with one another over the division of these spoils, and so were left behind in the pursuit. But Metellus would not allow this, and in all other ways was considerate of him, not assuming any superiority as a man of consular rank and the elder, except that when they shared the same camp the watchword was given out to all from the tent of Metellus; but for the most part they encamped apart.

And finally, by cutting off their supplies, plundering the country, and getting control of the sea, he drove both of them out of that part of Spain which was under him, and forced them to take refuge in other provinces for lack of provisions.

Lucullus was consul at this time, and was not on good terms with Pompey, but since he was soliciting the conduct of the Mithridatic war for himself, made great efforts to have the money sent, 27 for fear of furthering Pompey's desire to let Sertorius go, and march against Mithridates, an antagonist whose subjection, as it was thought, would bring great glory and involve little difficulty.

He had indeed the same forces and equipment, but lacked equal judgement in the use of them. Accordingly, Pompey took the field against him at once, and perceiving that he had no fixed plan of campaign, sent out ten cohorts as a decoy for him, giving them orders to scatter at random over the plain.

In this he did not show ingratitude, nor that he was unmindful of what had happened in Sicily, 29 as some allege against him, but exercised great forethought and salutary judgement for the commonwealth.

Pompey, therefore, fearing that this might stir up greater wars than those now ended, put Perpenna to death and burned the letters without even reading them.

For this reason, too, Crassus, who had the command in that war, precipitated the battle at great hazard, and was successful, killing twelve thousand three hundred of the enemy.

Wherefore those who ran out and greeted him on his way, out of their goodwill, were no more numerous than those who did it out of fear.

Then there remained but one accusation for envious tongues to make, namely, that he devoted himself more to the people than to the senate, and had determined to restore the authority of the tribunate, which Sulla had overthrown, and to court the favour of the many; which was true.

Pompey therefore regarded it as a great good fortune that he had the opportunity for this political measure, since he could have found no other favour with which to repay the goodwill of his fellow-citizens, if another had anticipated him in this.

For he gave them back their tribunate, and suffered the courts of justice to be transferred again to the knights by law.

Honours and penalties are also awarded, according to the career of each. When he was near and could be plainly seen, he ordered his lictors to make way for him, and led his horse up to the tribunal.

Then the senior censor put the question: In fact, it was no longer easy to meet him or even to see him without a throng around him, but he took the greatest pleasure in making his appearance attended by large crowds, encompassing his presence thus with majesty and pomp, and thinking that he must keep his dignity free from contact and familiar association with the multitude.

Such men claim that precedence in the city also which they have in the field, while those who achieve less distinction in the field feel it to be intolerable if in the city at any rate they have no advantage.

Therefore when the people find a man active in the forum who has shone in camps and triumphs, they depress and humiliate him, but when he renounces and withdraws from such activity, they leave his military reputation and power untouched by their envy.

How true, this is, events themselves soon showed. And presently men whose wealth gave them power, and those whose lineage was illustrious, and those who laid claim to superior intelligence, began to embark on piratical craft and share their enterprises, feeling that the occupation brought them a certain reputation and distinction.

They also offered strange sacrifices of their own at Olympus, 36 and celebrated there certain secret rites, among which those of Mithras continue to the present time, having been first instituted by them.

Once, too, they seized two praetors, Sextilius and Bellinus, in their purple-edged robes, and carried them away, together with their attendants and lictors.

They also captured a daughter of Antonius, a man who had celebrated a triumph, as she was going into the country, and exacted a large ransom for her.

But their crowning insolence was this. Then some would put Roman boots on his feet, and others would throw a toga round him, in order, forsooth, that there might be no mistake about him again.

This was what most of all inclined the Romans, who were hard put to it to get provisions and expected a great scarcity, to send out Pompey with a commission to take the sea away from the pirates.

These limits included almost all places in the Roman world, and the greatest nations and most powerful kings were comprised within them.

When these provisions of the law were read in the assembly, 37 the people received them with excessive pleasure, but the chief and most influential men of the senate thought that such unlimited and absolute power, while it was beyond the reach of envy, was yet a thing to be feared.

The rest vehemently attacked Pompey. And when one of the consuls told him that if he emulated Romulus he would not escape the fate of Romulus, 38 he was near being torn in pieces by the multitude.

He therefore made signs with his fingers that they should not choose Pompey alone to this command, but give him a colleague.

At this, we are told, the people were incensed and gave forth such a shout that a raven flying over the forum was stunned by it and fell down into the throng.

On hearing, however, that the law had been passed, he entered the city by night, feeling that he was sure to awaken envy if the people thronged to meet him.

But when day came, he appeared in public and offered sacrifice, and at an assembly held for him he managed to get many other things besides those already voted, and almost doubled his armament.

Twenty-four men who had held command or served as praetors were chosen from the senate by him, and he had two quaestors. Against these Pompey intended to proceed in person with his sixty best ships.

This was owing to his own tireless energy and the zeal of his lieutenants. As a consequence Piso came near being deprived of his consulship, and Gabinius had the requisite law already written out.

Just as he was leaving the city, he read two inscriptions, each of a single verse, addressed to him, one inside the gate: All these he spared, and it was chiefly by their aid that he tracked down, seized, and punished those who were still lurking in concealment because conscious of unpardonable crimes.

The men themselves, who were more than twenty thousand in number, he did not once think of putting to death; and yet to let them go and suffer them to disperse or band together again, poor, warlike, and numerous as they were, he thought was not well.

To most of them, however, he gave as residence Dyme in Achaea, which was then bereft of men and had much good land.

Metellus hemmed in many of them and was killing and destroying them. Pompey himself, however, on receiving his letters and learning what had been decreed, while his friends surrounded him with their congratulations, frowned, we are told, smote his thigh, and said, in the tone of one who was already oppressed and burdened with command: For he sent out edicts in all directions calling the soldiers to his standard, and summoned the subject potentates and kings into his presence.

And since both were very great and very successful generals, their lictors had their rods alike wreathed with laurel when they met; but Lucullus was advancing from green and shady regions, while Pompey chanced to have made a long march through a parched and treeless country.

This was held to be a sign that Pompey was coming to rob Lucullus of the fruits of his victories and of his glory. At first, however, their interview was conducted with all possible civility and friendliness, each magnifying the other's exploits and congratulating him on his successes; but in the conferences which followed they could come to no fair or reasonable agreement, nay, they actually abused each other, Pompey charging Lucullus with love of money, and Lucullus charging Pompey with love of power, and they were with difficulty separated by their friends.

To this Lucullus retorted that Pompey was going forth to fight an image and shadow of war, following his custom of alighting, like a lazy carrion-bird, on bodies that others had killed, and tearing to pieces the scattered remnants of wars.

Therefore it was no wonder that he was trying to usurp the glory of the Pontic and Armenian wars, a man who contrived to thrust himself in some way or other into the honour of a triumph for defeating runaway slaves.

At once, then, his camp was abundantly supplied with water, and men wondered that in all the time of his encampment Mithridates had been ignorant of this possibility.

But after enduring a siege of forty-five days, Mithridates succeeded in stealing off with his most effective troops; the sick and unserviceable he killed.

Then, however, Pompey overtook him near the Euphrates river, and encamped close by; and fearing lest the king should get the advantage of him by crossing the Euphrates, he put his army in battle array and led it against him at midnight.

He dreamed that he was sailing the Pontic Sea with a fair wind, and was already in sight of the Bosporus, and was greeting pleasantly his fellow-voyagers, as a man would do in his joy over a manifest and sure deliverance; but suddenly he saw himself bereft of all his companions and tossed about on a small piece of wreckage.

As he dreamed of such distress, his friends came to his couch and roused him with the news that Pompey was advancing to the attack.

But when Pompey perceived their preparations to meet him, he hesitated to hazard matters in the dark, and thought it necessary merely to surround them, in order to prevent their escape, and then to attack them when it was day, since they were superior in numbers.

Mithridates himself, however, at the outset, cut and charged his way through the Romans with eight hundred horsemen; but the rest were soon dispersed and he was left with three companions.

He also gave each of his friends a deadly poison to carry with them, that no one of them might fall into the hands of the enemy against his will.

Tigranes, accordingly, not only obeyed them in this, but also unloosed his sword and gave it to them; and finally, when he came into the presence of Pompey himself, he took off his royal tiara and made as if to lay it at his feet, and what was most humiliating of all, would have thrown himself down and clasped his knees in supplication.

But his son was dissatisfied, and when he was invited to supper, said that he was not dependent on Pompey for such honours, for he himself could find another Roman to bestow them.

Upon this, he was put in chains and reserved for the triumph. The greatest of these peoples are the Albanians and the Iberians, of whom the Iberians extend to the Moschian mountains and the Euxine Sea, while the Albanians lie to the eastward as far as the Caspian Sea.

To do this, they crossed the river Cyrnus, which rises in the Iberian mountains, and receiving the Araxes as it issues from Armenia, empties itself by twelve mouths into the Caspian.

Although Pompey could have opposed the enemy's passage of the river, he suffered them to cross undisturbed; then he attacked them, routed them, and slew great numbers of them.

Notwithstanding, Pompey routed this people also in a great battle, in which nine thousand of them were slain and more than ten thousand taken prisoners; then he invaded Colchis, where, at the river Phasis, Servilius met him, at the head of the fleet with which he was guarding the Euxine.

He found them drawn up on the river Abas, sixty thousand foot and twelve thousand horse, but wretchedly armed, and clad for the most part in the skins of wild beasts.

In this battle it is said that there were also Amazons fighting on the side of the Barbarians, and that they came down from the mountains about the river Thermodon.

For when the Romans were despoiling the Barbarians after the battle, they came upon Amazonian shields and buskins; but no body of a woman was seen.

With these peoples, who meet them by the river Thermodon, they consort for two months every year; then they go away and live by themselves.

Of all the concubines of Mithridates that were brought to Pompey, he used not one, but restored them all to their parents and kindred; for most of them were daughters and wives of officials and princes.

In this way he was with difficulty persuaded, and putting on his purple robes and leaping upon his horse, he rode though the city, crying: Of such a stock and lineage was Stratonice.

For there were memoranda among them from which it was discovered that, besides many others, he had poisoned to death his son Ariarathes, and also Alcaeus of Sardis, because he had surpassed him in driving race-horses.

There were also letters from Monime to him, of a lascivious nature, and answering letters from him to her. Moreover, Theophanes says there was found here an address of Rutilius, which incited the king to the massacre of the Romans in Asia.

Wherefore, to gratify these other kings, he would not deign, in answering a letter from the king of Parthia, to address him as King of Kings, which was his usual title.

In order, therefore, that he might connect the circuit of his military expeditions with the Red Sea, he put his army in motion.

And, besides, he saw that it was difficult to hunt Mithridates down with an armed force, and that he was harder to deal with when he fled than when he gave battle.

Some cities he built up, others he set free, chastising their tyrants. Thus when the Armenians and Parthians referred to him the decision of a territorial quarrel, he sent them three arbiters and judges.

This enabled him to hide away most of the transgressions of his friends and intimates, since he was not fitted by nature to restrain or chastise evil doers; but he was so helpful himself to those who had dealings with him that they were content to endure the rapacity and severity of his friends.

The following story is told about him. When he beheld before the gate of the city a throng of men in white raiment, and drawn up along the road the youths on one side, and the boys on the other, he was vexed, supposing this to be done out of deference and honour to himself, who desired nothing of the kind.

For instance, it is said that many times at his entertainments, when Pompey was awaiting and receiving his other guests, that fellow would be already reclining at table in great state, with the hood of his toga drawn down behind his ears.

But even this was not large enough to excite envy, so that when he who succeeded Pompey as its owner entered it, he was amazed, and inquired where Pompey the Great used to sup.

At any rate, so the story runs. Pompey, therefore, wishing to confirm him in his purpose, marched towards Petra, an expedition which was not a little censured by most of his followers.

Pompey, however, thinking it easier to crush the king's forces when he made war than to seize his person when he was in flight, was not willing to wear out his own strength in a vain pursuit, and therefore sought other employment in the interval of the war and thus protracted the time.

For when he was come within a short distance of Petra, and had already pitched his camp for that day and was exercising himself on horseback near by, dispatch-bearers rode up from Pontus bringing good tidings.

Such messengers are known at once by the tips of their spears, which are wreathed with laurel. As soon as the soldiers saw these couriers they ran in throngs to Pompey.

Here he found many gifts that had been brought from Pharnaces, and many dead bodies of the royal family, and the corpse of Mithridates himself, which was not easy to recognize by the face for the embalmers had neglected to remove the brain , but those who cared to see the body recognized it by the scars.

All this escaped the knowledge of Pompey at the time, but Pharnaces afterwards learned of it and punished the thieves.

For instance, when he came to Mitylene, he gave the city its freedom, for the sake of Theophanes, and witnessed the traditional contest of the poets there, who now took as their sole theme his own exploits.

He departed, remarking that his, Madara Uchiha 's plans, would soon be complete. Tobi continued to keep tabs on Sasuke as he moved into confrontation with Itachi.

Fated Battle Between Brothers. When a group of Konoha ninja were about to interfere with Sasuke and Itachi's fight, Tobi intercepted them, keeping them busy until Zetsu reported Sasuke's victory.

Because the Konoha ninja heard Zetsu's report, Tobi quickly teleported to Sasuke's location and escaped with his unconscious body. He treated Sasuke's injuries and waited for him to wake up.

When he does, Tobi introduced himself as Madara Uchiha and exposed his right Sharingan to prove his identity.

This triggered an Amaterasu in Sasuke's left eye against Tobi. Tobi retreated into the darkness while he put out the flames, returning with his mask back on to muse about how far Itachi would go to protect Sasuke.

Sasuke was confused, so Tobi divulged the Uchiha's history — though he denied his involvement in the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's Attack — and the truth surrounding Itachi's role in the Uchiha Clan Downfall.

Sasuke was overwhelmed with grief for having killed Itachi and resolved to avenge him by destroying Konoha. He speaks to Sasuke when he wakes up about the so-called "justice" of the ninja villages, which is built upon an endless cycle of deaths and loss.

He contrasts this with hatred, which he claims to be both focused and finite. When Sasuke's eyes start to bother him, Tobi offers him Itachi's eye drops and the receipt for the prescription, which sends Sasuke to the Howling Wolf Village.

Because they had a shared interest in destroying Konoha, Tobi convinced Sasuke and his team, Taka , to start working with Akatsuki.

Before Akatsuki could offer its assistance, Tobi assigned Taka the task of capturing the Eight-Tails , one of the two remaining tailed beasts.

After Taka left, Tobi met with Kisame , consoling him over Itachi's death and revealing his face, allowing Kisame to recognise him as the former Mizukage.

Tobi also met with Zetsu and they discussed how much easier their plans would be now that Itachi was dead.

Zetsu questioned Akatsuki's recent actions, specifically the loss of five members, but Tobi insisted it had all been worth it to gain Sasuke's loyalty.

The remaining members of Akatsuki began the sealing process, but quickly found that it was only one of the Eight-Tails' tentacles disguised as B. Tobi was irritated that Sasuke failed in his mission, but still sealed the tentacle into the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path so that it would have at least a fragment of the beast's chakra.

What's more, Pain Nagato gave his life to perform the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique and revive the villagers he killed.

Upset by yet more setbacks, Tobi assigns Kisame to capture B and tracks down Sasuke and Taka on their way to attack Konoha. He informs them that they are too late since the village is already gone and adds that they still owe Akatsuki for their failure to catch the Eight-Tails.

Tobi sees a compromise: Sasuke agrees to the arrangement and is escorted to the Land of Iron by Zetsu. Once he and Taka get there, however, Tobi instructs Zetsu to reveal their presence to the assembled Kage.

While Taka is placed against the Kage's combined might, Tobi meets with Naruto - who is also in the Land of Iron - in an effort to understand Nagato's change of heart.

Kakashi Hatake and Yamato confront him, but Tobi doesn't want to fight, instead telling them about the Sage of the Six Paths , the truth of the Uchiha clan, and Sasuke's descent into darkness.

They doubt the validity of what he tells them, but he is unconcerned and leaves shortly afterwards. As Sasuke is about to be killed by the Kage, Tobi rescues him.

He sends Sasuke away, sending Karin with him so she can heal his injuries. Telling the Kage and those in attendance that he is Madara Uchiha, he explains the Eye of the Moon Plan to them and concludes by asking for their support by giving him Killer B and Naruto.

The Kage refuse, so Tobi declares war on them all before disappearing. Tobi observes the battle and is glad when Sasuke is finally able to fully develop Susanoo.

Cursing him, Tobi gets a new arm and makes plans to retrieve Nagato's Rinnegan to prepare for war. Before he can leave, Zetsu informs him of Sasuke's fight with Naruto.

Tobi interrupts them and advises Sasuke to save the fight for another time in light of Sasuke's deteriorating vision. Once back at the Mountains' Graveyard , Tobi restores Sasuke's vision at his request by implanting him with Itachi's eyes, then leaves him to recuperate.

Fourth Shinobi World War: As he is leaving the Mountains' Graveyard, Tobi is confronted by Kabuto Yakushi who requests to ally with Tobi in the coming war.

Tobi declines and attacks him, prompting Kabuto to use the Summoning: Kabuto offers them as pawns to be used on the battlefield, and all he asks in return is to be given Sasuke.

Tobi contemplates refusal, to which Kabuto responds by reviving Madara Uchiha. Horrified that Kabuto knows that Madara is actually dead, Tobi is forced to accept an alliance, but sets the condition that Sasuke will not be turned over until after the war.

Kabuto agrees and sends the summons away. Tobi escorts Kabuto into his hideout so he can assess his battle strength and reformulate his plans for war.

Tobi later infiltrates Amegakure to acquire Nagato's corpse. He is immediately confronted by Konan. Tobi tries to buy back her cooperation by informing her of his involvement in Yahiko 's creation of Akatsuki, but she doesn't believe him.

Konan turns into paper and engulfs Tobi, hoping to use the exploding tags mingled with her paper in order to sacrifice herself and kill him.

Tobi realises what she's up to in time and warps the explosion away — saving both of their lives — but loses his right arm. Konan tries another attack, detonating a constant series of six hundred billion paper explosives.

The explosions go on for a period of ten minutes, longer than Tobi can remain intangible for. He therefore uses his left Sharingan to perform Izanagi to survive the attack.

Unaware of this and thinking he's dead, Konan lowers her guard, allowing Tobi to sneak up behind her and stab her. He asks what it is about Naruto that could have caused her and Nagato to betray him in the way that they have, to which she responds that Naruto is the light that will build a bridge to peace.

Tobi avows himself as the darkness that crushes Naruto's light and places her under a genjutsu to extract the location of Nagato's body before he kills her.

When Tobi finds Nagato's body, he sees Nagato smiling at him, which he interprets as continued betrayal. He shuts Nagato's eyes before teleporting the body away.

Kabuto offers to capture them for him as a sign of good faith. He ultimately fails, but does manage to bring back Yamato , who he can use strengthen the White Zetsu Army.

Tobi finds this a fair alternative. When preparations are complete the thousands of Zetsu and many of Kabuto's reincarnated ninja mobilise, initiating the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Tobi suspects that Kabuto led her to their hideout and believes Kabuto plans to have Akatsuki and the Allied Shinobi Forces destroy each other.

Although confident that this will not happen, Tobi orders Kabuto to kill Anko. Kabuto refuses on the grounds that he can use Anko to make the Impure World Reincarnation stronger, something that is in Tobi's best interests.

Tobi remains uneasy about Kabuto and has White Zetsu plant spores on him so that his actions can be monitored.

He later learns that Naruto and B have left their confinement and joined the battle. With things moving towards their conclusion, Tobi goes to the location of the First Division where he summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.

Darui and Shikamaru conclude that he plans to make use of the brothers' Nine-Tails chakra as part of his plans and try to stop him.

He compliments them on guessing his intentions and has the Statue attack them while he escapes with the two items. Naruto headbutts Tobi as soon as they meet, to which Tobi only responds by pointing out that Naruto couldn't even scratch his mask.

Naruto notices his new Rinnegan and remarks that it is the same as the "other" Madara's. Realising that Kabuto has revealed his secret, Tobi quietly curses Kabuto before shedding his Madara-identity, embracing the role of "nobody".

In the confusion of their appearance, the Five-Tails breaks free of Tobi's control but he promptly subdues it. He then forces the Four-Tails and Six-Tails to fully transform in an attempt to stack the odds in his favour.

Instead, the Four-Tails manages to communicate to Naruto how Tobi is controlling it. Naruto escapes from its mouth, locates the chakra receiver embedded in the Four-Tails' flesh, and removes it.

Despite the overwhelming power of the five tailed beasts, Naruto, working in full cooperation with the Nine-Tails, is able to neutralise all of them and release them from Tobi's influence.

Like the Four-Tails, Tobi seals them back into the Statue. Despite the setbacks, Tobi remains confident that he will emerge victorious.

As this could only mean that Kabuto has failed, Tobi realises that time is running out. Despite their combined efforts they are unable to get past Tobi or damage him.

Tobi is even able to turn some of their own attacks against them, such as a lightning -infused kunai that Kakashi is forced to send away with Kamui.

After this latter exchange, however, Kakashi notices that Tobi's mask takes damage. Unable to attribute the damage to any of their attacks, Kakashi tests a theory: Naruto attacks Tobi with a Rasengan , and when it appears to pass through Tobi, Kakashi targets the Rasengan with Kamui.

Tobi's arm is then damaged. Kakashi concludes that his Kamui and Tobi's ability share the same dimension ; that attacks sent to the dimension at the same moment that Tobi has transported his body parts there for safety will do damage to Tobi.

Now that they have a strategy to use against Tobi, Naruto, B, Guy, and Kakashi begin to coordinate their efforts. One of Naruto's shadow clones attacks Tobi, but the attack appears to fail and the clone disappears.

The real Naruto attacks immediately afterwards with a Tailed Beast Ball , which Tobi avoids by retreating to the other dimension.

There he finds Naruto's shadow clone waiting for him, having been sent there by Kakashi's Kamui. Before he has a chance to react he is hit in the face with a Rasengan, shattering his mask.

His face revealed, Kakashi and Guy recognise him as their former team-mate Obito Uchiha. Kakashi is devastated to learn that Obito is not only alive but is now one of the world's worst criminals.

Before he can find out how Obito survived, the reincarnated Madara Uchiha arrives at Obito's side. Seeing the Demonic Statue, Madara chides Obito for reviving the Ten-Tails prematurely and reviving him in the state he is in.

Obito informs him of Nagato's betrayal before returning to him his gunbai and directing him to Naruto and B.

While Madara goes after them, Obito fights Kakashi. He ignores Kakashi's pleas for an explanation and nearly kills him, stopped only by Naruto.

When Kakashi gets over his initial shock and starts to fight seriously, Obito sends him away with Kamui. This is part of Kakashi's plan, as through a combination of efforts Naruto and Killer B nearly destroy the Demonic Statue.

But the attack comes a moment too late, and from the smoke emerges the Ten-Tails. Obito and Madara take position atop the Ten-Tails' head and attach themselves to it so they can control its actions.

Because they no longer need Naruto or B, they direct the Ten-Tails to kill them. The combined Allied Shinobi Forces arrive in time to stop the attack.

The Allies collaborate against the Ten-Tails and succeed in restraining it, but the Ten-Tails matures to its next form and releases itself.

Though this was countered easily enough, they have the Ten-Tails destroy the Allied Shinobi Forces' Headquarters to prevent future collaborations.

Madara remarks that the battle is more difficult than it should be and blames Obito's deviations from the original plan, namely not bringing Madara back to life in the correct way.

Obito replies that he never trusted Madara would keep his word and that he now follows his own version of the Eye of the Moon Plan. Obito uses the beast as a medium to fire off several wooden projectiles into the assembled Alliance.

Naruto and the Allies refuse to be broken by their shared loss and instead unite for yet another attack, successfully separating the Ten-Tails from Madara and Obito's control.

Madara and Obito join forces against the shinobi army, but now have the unrestrained Ten-Tails to contend with. Obito intercepts him and together they relocate to the other dimension.

With nobody to interrupt them, Kakashi again tries to speak with him, and Obito finally starts to answer some of his questions, explicitly stating Kakashi should feel no guilt for killing Rin so many years ago.

Kakashi tries to explain, but Obito saves him the trouble, saying he already knows the circumstances surrounding Rin's death and that it was Rin's idea to die, which is what led him to despair at the world that forced Rin to kill herself.

Kakashi persists that what Obito is doing is wrong, but Obito continues to rebuff him. In an ensuing fight, he directs the outcome to have Kakashi stab him through the heart with a lightning-infused kunai in order to get rid of the Forbidden Individual Curse Tag Madara placed on him years ago.

Obito gives Kakashi a non-fatal stab in return which causes him to fall to the ground and allows Obito to return to the real world. Badly injured, Obito teleports to the top of the Ten-Tails.

Madara senses his return and his weakened state and exerts his control over Obito to try and force him to perform the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique and bring him back to life.

Before the technique can be completed the Allies try to eliminate Obito, including a reincarnated Minato , who is able to teleport to Obito's location using the same Flying Thunder God seal he branded Obito with years earlier.

Minato and Obito only recognise each other after Obito has been cut down. Madara admits defeat, but not because Obito is dead: Obito, already beyond Madara's influence, was sealing the Ten-Tails into his body , a process he completed in time.

Attacks do not affect him and his Truth-Seeking Balls overcome every defence that is placed against him. The Allies' only advantage is Obito's lack of control; the Ten-Tails' power physically distorts his body and some inner struggle deprives of any discretion or precision in his actions.

Deep within his mind, Obito fights to rein in the Ten-Tails and keep it from tearing him apart. By focusing on a picture of his old team , he is able to subjugate the Ten-Tails' power.

In a blind gamble, Gamakichi uses Starch Syrup Gun against Obito, which is the first attack to not be completely nullified.

Naruto realises that, despite all of Obito's new powers, he remains vulnerable to senjutsu. With the moon nearing the optimal position to perform the Infinite Tsukuyomi , Obito begins making final preparations.

He traps the Alliance in a barrier and creates an enormous tree with four flowers, each flower charging a Tailed Beast Ball. The balls are fired at the shinobi forces but Naruto and Minato teleport everyone to safety.

After repelling the two's senjutsu-fueled counterattack, Obito summons the tree form of the Ten-Tails and has it absorb the chakra of nearby ninja, taking their chakra and killing many.

Obito uses this rising death toll to shatter the determination of the Shinobi Alliance, offering them mercy if they stop fighting and allow themselves to enter the infinite dream.

Naruto is nearly shattered, but is galvanised by Sasuke's refusal to surrender and he rallies the shinobi forces. Naruto and Sasuke join forces, combining their own senjutsu abilities against him to increasingly greater effect.

Obito, who is fighting both the shinobi alliance by controlling the tree and Naruto and Sasuke personally, becomes frustrated with their continued attacks and Naruto's denial of his way of thinking.

Obito forms the Sword of Nunoboko , intending to use it to strike all of them down for good. Naruto and Sasuke realise they will only have a small window to defeat Obito so they enlist the aid of their classmates from Konoha to help them with a combined attack against Obito.

They successfully overwhelm Obito and he begins to lose control of the Ten-Tails' chakra, giving the Alliance a chance to pull it from his body. During this time, Naruto enters Obito's consciousness through their linked chakras and begins to reason with him.

Though he tries to resist the pull of both Naruto's words and the Shinobi Alliance's grip on his chakra, the chakra of the nine tailed beasts is removed from him and he falls to the ground, his power and transformation gone and his battle lost.

As Obito lies helpless, Kakashi finally returns from Kamui's dimension with the resolve to kill him. Minato stops him and explains it's no longer necessary, as Obito's defeat by Naruto has finally shown him that he was wrong all this time and that deep down, he was living a lie fighting for the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

As the Alliance begins shifting their attention to Madara, who is fighting elsewhere, Obito decides to use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to revive everyone he's killed as atonement for his sins.

As he is performing the technique, Black Zetsu emerges from underground and forces him to change targets, reviving Madara instead.

Black Zetsu tries to take the Rinnegan Obito is using also, but realises it will not be able to get away from Kakashi and Minato.

Obito explains to them what he has been forced to do and pleads with them to destroy his Rinnegan at any cost. While he struggles against Black Zetsu's control, the Demonic Statue is summoned from Obito's body, sapping what little energy he has left and enabling Black Zetsu to overpower him.

Madara tries to convince Obito of the error he is making and lets his guard down while he gives Obito another chance. Obito opts instead to stab Madara, and in the process steals fragments of the One-Tail and Eight-Tails ' chakra, embracing his identity as Obito Uchiha for the first time in years.

Because Obito has all of the pieces that Madara still needs for his plans, his escape becomes paramount.

Kakashi uses Kamui on him while he also uses it on himself, allowing him to flee to the other dimension before Madara can stop him.

In the other dimension, Obito finds Sakura and Naruto, the former performing emergency life support on the latter because of the removal of the Nine-Tails' Yang -half from his body.

Although she is sceptical of Obito, she allows him to seal the Nine-Tails' Yin-half and the other tailed beasts' chakra he has into Naruto since it's the only chance of saving him.

When Naruto recovers, Obito sends him back to the real world to fight. He then asks Sakura to destroy his Rinnegan. Before she can go through with it Madara arrives, having stolen Kakashi's Sharingan so that he could confront Obito.

Obito teleports Sakura away so that Madara couldn't kill her. Because Obito is out of options, Madara gets one last thing off his chest: With that said, Black Zetsu takes control of Obito's body.

Obito awakens later to find circumstances greatly changed: Naruto creates an opportunity for Obito and Sakura to infiltrate Kaguya's core dimension and then draws her away while they work.

Through a process of trial-and-error — the stress this causes to his body being healed by Sakura — Obito searches through Kaguya's dimensions with Kamui and eventually finds Sasuke.

Obito returns Sasuke and Sakura to the dimension where Naruto and Kakashi are. He watches as Naruto and Sasuke fight Kaguya, their combined powers the only ones capable of stopping her.

Aware of this, Kaguya relocates them to a dimension with powerful gravity and pins Naruto and Sasuke down while she attacks with All-Killing Ash Bones.

Obito and Kakashi, empowered by a shared memory of their past friendship, place themselves in front of Naruto and Sasuke as shields.

Because his odyssey began by saving Kakashi from death by a boulder, Obito decides he must now end things by saving Kakashi's life again: Obito's body begins to crumble and there is nothing anyone can do to save him.

He warns Kakashi that he will not be around to save him a third time and places his faith for a better world in Naruto before dying with a smile. Obito finds himself in the limbo between life and the afterlife.

There, he sees Rin waiting for him. Obito apologises for taking so long to join her and also for many of the things he did while she waited for him.

Rin assures him that it was okay because he tried his very hardest and that she was always watching him. Though he is eager to start spending time with her, he is worried that Kakashi might do something stupid like die and ruin things between them again.

Kakashi uses them and the resulting Susanoo to provide backup for Naruto and Sasuke, giving them the opening they need to defeat Kaguya. With all scores settled, Obito apologises to Kakashi one final time for everything and the two part fully reconciled with Obito now free to join Rin in the afterlife.

Following Obito's apparent death, Kakashi was left greatly changed by the experience. Obito's philosophy about the importance of team-mates also guided Kakashi during all his future missions and, once Kakashi was old enough to begin training his own students, became the single most important lesson he wanted them to learn and demonstrate.

On a more personal level, Obito's death remained ever in his thoughts and he would often spend his time visiting the Memorial Stone where Obito's name is engraved to reflect on events.

Naruto's parents died that night, leaving him an orphan. Like Obito before him, Naruto came to dream of gaining Konoha's acknowledgment by becoming Hokage and pursued that goal against all odds.

The suspicion that an Uchiha was behind the attack would ultimately lead to the clan's downfall. Sasuke, the only Uchiha to be spared from death, dedicated his life to taking vengeance against those behind the death of his family at any cost.

Despite the dark path he took in his life, Obito's actions eventually led the Five Great Shinobi Countries aligning with one another to form the Allied Shinobi Forces , and later the Shinobi Union , ultimately fulfilling his promise of ending all wars and bringing peace to the world to Rin.

Naruto the Movie Tobi appears before Naruto and Sakura and traps them in the Limited Tsukuyomi , sending them to an alternate reality with the intention of eventually allowing him to extract the Nine-Tails.

From their original world, Tobi collaborates with a masked man known as Menma. This creates Tobi's opening: Sakura interrupts him, giving Naruto a chance to retaliate and defeat him.

Tobi emerges from Menma's body and tries to attack once more, but is stopped by that world's Minato and Kushina. Giving it up as a lost cause, Tobi ends the Limited Tsukuyomi, letting Naruto and Sakura return to the original world.

The above-listed games refer to Obito with his true-personality. Because of the many outfits he has had throughout the series, he is playable in different costumes in different games, some of which come with their own movesets:.

T O WHAT expedient, then, shall we finally resort, for maintaining in practice the necessary partition of power among the several departments, as laid down in the Constitution?

The only answer that can be given is, that as all these exterior provisions are found to be inadequate, the defect must be supplied, by so contriving the interior structure of the government as that its several constituent parts may, by their mutual relations, be the means of keeping each other in their proper places.

Without presuming to undertake a full development of this important idea, I will hazard a few general observations, which may perhaps place it in a clearer light, and enable us to form a more correct judgment of the principles and structure of the government planned by the convention.

In order to lay a due foundation for that separate and distinct exercise of the different powers of government, which to a certain extent is admitted on all hands to be essential to the preservation of liberty, it is evident that each department should have a will of its own; and consequently should be so constituted that the members of each should have as little agency as possible in the appointment of the members of the others.

Were this principle rigorously adhered to, it would require that all the appointments for the supreme executive, legislative, and judiciary magistracies should be drawn from the same fountain of authority, the people, through channels having no communication whatever with one another.

Perhaps such a plan of constructing the several departments would be less difficult in practice than it may in contemplation appear.

Some difficulties, however, and some additional expense would attend the execution of it. Some deviations, therefore, from the principle must be admitted.

In the constitution of the judiciary department in particular, it might be inexpedient to insist rigorously on the principle: It is equally evident, that the members of each department should be as little dependent as possible on those of the others, for the emoluments annexed to their offices.

Were the executive magistrate, or the judges, not independent of the legislature in this particular, their independence in every other would be merely nominal.

But the great security against a gradual concentration of the several powers in the same department, consists in giving to those who administer each department the necessary constitutional means and personal motives to resist encroachments of the others.

The provision for defense must in this, as in all other cases, be made commensurate to the danger of attack. Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.

The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government.

But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary.

If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions.

For the Fourth Shinobi World War he changes to an outfit similar to what the Uchiha wore during the Warring States Period ; this attire includes a pair of black pants and gloves, with a white form-fitting shirt underneath.

Around his waist he wears a simple, light-purple obi and a belt. Strapped to his back is Madara's gunbai , now purple with black trimmings and black tomoe, connected to a black chain that runs up his right sleeve.

In addition, the entire right half of his body gains a scale-like pattern across it, replacing the scars. In this new form, the scale-half of his body became less prominent and the ten protrusions on his back expanded to form the collar and coattails of a haori.

He also had two horns sprouted from his forehead — the left smaller than the right — and six magatama markings appeared across his chest.

During his imagination of his life as a Konoha shinobi while battling Naruto, Obito depicted himself wearing both Uchiha and Konoha uniforms but with a modified forehead protector with covers that stretch down the left half of his face to conceal his missing left eye.

During his time as a Konoha ninja, Obito's abilities were average at best, struggling to match his classmates from the Academy.

Madara saw great potential in Obito and thus selected him as his disciple. At age 14, Obito posed a challenge to the Fourth Hokage and nearly destroyed Konoha.

Obito's chakra reserves were enhanced by the White Zetsu matter equipped to his body, enabling him to perform several chakra-taxing techniques without noticeable exhaustion.

The right side of Obito's body was badly damaged during the mission in Kusagakure, and he even lost his right arm.

To heal his body and replace the limb, Madara outfitted Obito with the same substance that the White Zetsu are made of, [56] enhancing his chakra reserves and eventually allowing him to perform Wood Release.

He also gains certain physical augmentations of Hashirama Senju's DNA, such as great durability to attacks, rapid healing , [57] and the ability to survive without food or water.

Obito learned from Madara how to perform a variety of different types of ninjutsu: Obito could utilise all five basic nature transformations along with Yin—Yang Release.

Blast Wave Wild Dance. With the White Zetsu matter used as his replacement limbs, Obito could perform Wood Release , a combination of earth and water -based chakra.

Instinctively, he was able to form branches and roots to bind, [65] crush , [66] or skewer opponents. Like many Uchiha, Obito was trained in shurikenjutsu , allowing him to throw shuriken with precision for offence and defence.

When Madara died, a number of weapons were left to Obito which he has used at different times over the years. Several of these weapons he keeps stored within Kamui's dimension so that he can access them anywhere and fire them at opponents; he is seen using giant shuriken and chakra receivers — fashioned into giant restraining stakes — for the latter purpose.

When Obito first awakened his Sharingan, it already had two tomoe , which at that level he could use to track chakra signatures and predict movements.

With his Sharingan he can perform various genjutsu on targets he has eye contact with, either to create illusions, [21] acquire information, [76] or control their actions.

Obito has a number of Sharingan in his possession which he keeps in storage should he need them. He uses one of these Sharingan to replace the one he gave to Kakashi, although he keeps it covered with his mask most of the time.

He later sacrifices this spare eye's vision in order to perform Izanagi , which allows the user to manipulate events around them. Izanagi ordinarily lasts for only the briefest of moments, but with his access to Hashirama's DNA he can maintain it for ten minutes using a single eye.

This grants Obito two distinct abilities: For teleportation, he absorbs himself through his right eye into the special dimension, and from there he can travel anywhere in the world instantly.

His intangibility is a more specialised application of the teleportation, where he sends only parts of his body to the other dimension so that he can pass through objects or, more often, objects can pass through him.

Kamui becomes Obito's signature fighting style to the point that he rarely resorts to more traditional forms of ninjutsu. In combat he uses his intangibility defensively, allowing opponents and their attacks to pass through him without harming him, and then as offence he teleports them to his dimension while they are disoriented so that they can no longer bother him.

The chakra signatures of those he sends to the other dimension cannot be sensed from outside of it. Because the two aspects of the technique are connected he can't use both at the same time; if he wants to teleport he can't be intangible, leaving him open to attack, and if he wants to be intangible he can't teleport, preventing him from escaping so long as he remains on the defensive.

Although Kakashi cannot use Kamui against Obito directly, [83] he can use his own access to the other dimension to negate the advantages Obito makes use of: Obito took the Rinnegan from Nagato's body after he died and implanted it in his left eye socket.

While he admitted that he could barely handle a single eye, Obito was capable of performing all of the Six Paths Techniques with the Rinnegan, though he was only ever seen performing abilities of the Outer Path: He controls them each with a single chakra receiver embedded into their bodies.

The effort required to not only maintain this coordination but to keep the tailed beasts under his control prevents Obito from manifesting any of the Six Paths Techniques in his Six Paths of Pain.

From Madara, Obito learned much about the world, individual people in it, and different abilities from throughout history. As such, it is difficult to surprise him in combat because he already knows tactics ninja from certain villages are likely to use, what weaknesses to take advantage of in different opponents, and how to counter most jutsu.

His insight enables him to plan years in advance, accurately predicting the course of nations and knowing just how to manipulate them to his advantage.

Indeed, Obito often kept multiple back-up plans, rarely pinning his hopes on a single outcome. Obito also demonstrates high abilities in manipulation, able to see the darkness in others and twist them to his own purposes with a clever mixture of truth and lies.

The balls are his primary weapons and generally float behind him in a halo-like formation. Once he found it and took Sasori's ring, he expressed his belief that he would now be able to join Akatsuki.

They next tracked down Deidara 's disembodied arm with its ring still attached. Tobi initially believed Deidara had also died, only for Deidara to appear before them shortly afterwards.

Tobi was somewhat relieved to see him, but was concerned for both his well-being and capability with rather offensive jokes, provoking Deidara to strangle him with his legs.

Tobi was indeed accepted into Akatsuki as Sasori's replacement, partnered with Deidara. He was assigned to capture the Three-Tails.

In the anime, Deidara treated Tobi to some dango before the mission, a ploy to get him to remove his mask. He turned away while he ate, preventing Deidara from seeing anything.

They split up after eating and Tobi eventually found Konoha shinobi using the Four-Corner Sealing Barrier , which he deduced was meant to seal the Three-Tails.

He informed Deidara of his discovery and they approached and killed the two Anbu put in charge of the sealing.

When they located the Three-Tails, Tobi tried to convince Deidara to fight it in his place. The rest of the battle went unseen.

After they defeated the Three-Tails, Tobi claimed responsibility for the beast's capture, saying his technique was flawless and that it made sense to assign him to the mission.

Deidara retorted that it was actually his clay that defeated the Three-Tails. Tobi, unconvinced, fell asleep during Deidara's argument.

Deidara "woke him up" by detonating a clay bomb next to him. When they got the Three-Tails to an Akatsuki base, the Akatsuki members convened and sealed it.

When they were done, they also sealed the Two-Tails the Two-Tails is sealed before the Three-Tails' capture in the anime. Deidara was angry that Sasuke killed Orochimaru before he had his own chance to and so, after the Four-Tails was sealed, resolved to kill Sasuke instead.

When they located Sasuke, Tobi approached him first and was immediately attacked. He briefly pretended to be killed and then complimented Sasuke's speed.

Having served the role of a distraction well, Tobi sat back as Deidara attacked Sasuke, occasionally offering assistance by planting Deidara's explosives around the area.

Deidara became increasingly desperate during their battle, forcing Tobi to retreat to a safe distance to escape the effects of his C4. Ultimately, Deidara resorted to using C0 , killing himself and catching Tobi in the blast.

Zetsu reported Tobi's and Deidara's deaths to Akatsuki. Shortly afterwards, Tobi met with Pain and Konan in Amegakure. He expressed his satisfaction with Sasuke's development, adding that, because Itachi 's death was imminent, they would be able to approach him soon.

He also remarked on Naruto Uzumaki and how impressed he was by his performance against Kakuzu. He instructed Pain to capture Naruto for the Nine-Tails sealed within him, but warned him not to underestimate Naruto.
